Sleepy Hollow: Watch Your Head by dotsweare Sleepy Hollow: Watch Your Head by dotsweare
J:

Back story: Anyway a couple of weeks ago I finally got the chance to watch Tim Burton's take on Sleepy Hollow (after much cajoling from K!) and that "must draw fanart" mindset immediately switched on.

I wanted to draw Ichabod Crane sooo badly, so here he is! Johnny Depp has such a gorgeous facial structure that I wanted to draw some sort of Depp fanart. Obviously this is the constable from the Burton film and not the school teacher from the original story haha XD

I tried to incorporate a bit of Burton's style in here and there's some Art Nouveau influence because I've always wanted to try it. This was more of an experiment than anything haha I also looked up pics of cardinals and human skulls on google to get an idea of how their anatomy and structure worked, but I didn't use any direct references.

Also I tried to incorporate a few of the movie elements in there, like the cardinal thaumatrope and skulls (the scene where Crane unearths them from the tree of the dead) and the flowers at the bottom (not that anyone can see them *siiiigh* but theyre a reference to Crane's mother) XD

I know the hands suck XD And as usual if there are any suggestions on how to improve anatomy, colours, composition, whatever, they are more than welcome!

SH belongs to Washington Irving and this take belongs to Tim Burton... the only thing that is mine is the art XDD

First of all, I had to Google thaumatrope...
But now that I know what it is, the motif with the bird flying out of it is quite clever! I watched part of this movie and I remember the skulls. This is a brilliant take on Johnny Depp's character, and it captures the persistent, and pensive Ichabod Crane perfectly!

The morbidness of the skulls really sets off the freedom and "coming to life" of the bird.

I'm terrible with terminology XD The only reason I knew the name was because it was mentioned on IMDB :P The recurring concept of the cardinal was pretty awesome in the movie, wasn't it? Perception could equate just about anything with magic if seen in the right light.

Thank you! :D

You're welcome. Admittedly, I haven't seen the whole thing from start to finish. It's one of those weird things with movies where I always seem to catch it at the same moment;ten minutes or so near the end.

My husband's brother in law used to work IT for a large video chain. When Sleepy Hollow came out,he got Rob a T shirt that had a dotted line around the neck that read "Remove Here".

I just love the way you incorporated the Art Nouveau style into this piece. And the composition with the bird coming out of the thaumatrope is a great idea! Lovely subtle coloring, and very Depp-ish! :)

Thank you! To me Burton seemed to have a bit of Art Nouveau influence in his own style with so many organic curves and whatnot. It's very fun to draw!

And apologies for the late reply!
